Keeping Our Loved Ones Close to Home

The New Stonewall & District Personal Care Home

Building a New Personal Care Home, Close to Home

Having a family member move into a personal care home (PCH) is difficult, even when the facility is close to home. When a loved one is hours away, it can be emotionally and financially devastating.

The Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority region has the lowest number of PCH beds per capita in Manitoba. In fact, we’re short 400 beds right now, and we have the highest percentage of people 65+. All too often, our families are seeing the people they love leave their home community when it’s time to move to a PCH.

Now, the province is partnering with the RMs of Rosser, St Laurent and Woodlands and the Towns of Stonewall and Teulon to build a 143-bed personal care home in Stonewall to serve everyone in the region.

The municipal partners have committed to raise $10 million from community to ensure our new PCH will be built, and that it will be designed to meet our communities’ needs – your needs.

This is a rare opportunity for each one of us to help shape the long-term care facility that will serve us, our families and our region for generations to come.

The Care We Deserve

The plan for our new personal care home was developed by and for our community and designed so that people can thrive, with dignity, stimulation and companionship.

The community’s investment of $10 million will ensure our new PCH features the best spaces and amenities for our most precious resource – our amazing people.

Designed around a modern, small house model, the 3-storey PCH will have 12 households (units) with 11 or 12 people sharing each household.

Each household will have everything any home does – a comfortable living room, a dining room where everyone can eat together, a cozy den, and a kitchen to prepare meals and snacks.

There will be dedicated Métis house to reflect and serve our area’s unique populations.

Our new regional PCH will have multiple gathering and recreational spaces where residents can take part in their favourite activities or socialize with their neighbours, and where community can come together for special events like concerts, family fun days and holiday dinners.

The contribution of $10 million from our communities will mean our new PCH will also have:

  • Amenities for families and visitors, including quiet lounges and accommodations for those visiting from afar
  • A large, bright, private bathroom with shower in each resident room
  • Large, low-silled windows so residents get a full view of the outdoors from their room or any other area of the facility
  • A state-of-the art track system in each room to ensure people with mobility problems can be assisted to move with dignity and ease to any part of their room
  • Access to the outdoors from every house through a balcony or, on the main floor, a patio.
  • Beautiful outdoor spaces to enjoy fresh air, gardening and group activities, including a ceremonial garden for everyone to use, with traditional plantings and a fire circle
  • Video-equipped rooms where residents, friends and family can connect virtually.

This is the care we deserve. This is the kind of home we can build together.

Spaces for Activities and Social Connection

Residents will take part in their favourite activities and socialize with their neighbours in spacious gathering and recreational spaces. Community will come together for special events, concerts, family fun days and holiday dinners in the large, multi-purpose area that opens onto the backyard.

Beautiful Outdoor Spaces

In the huge backyard, people will enjoy fresh air, gardening and group activities. There will be accessible paths, a screened gazebo, a garden swing, raised garden beds and peaceful seating areas. A serene ceremonial garden will feature traditional plantings and a fire circle for all residents and visitors to use.

Welcoming Spaces For Families

To make visiting as home-like as possible, there will be intimate lounges and a cozy family-dining area for special occasions or to share a meal. People visiting from afar will have access to private accommodations, and residents will be able to connect virtually with loved-ones in video-equipped rooms.
